Privacy Policy

Heritage Odyssey is built to need as little of your data as possible. There are no accounts, so nothing we measure carries your name.

What we collect

Anonymous usage statistics, so we can see which parts get used and decide what to build next:

• which screens and pages get opened
• the type of device and its operating system
• the language it is set to
• roughly where the app is being used — the country, region and town, worked out from your network address
• what you type into the search box, so we can see which places people look for and what we are missing
• a random code the app makes up and keeps on your device, so that several visits count as one person instead of several. It is not your device’s own identifier, we never link it to anything about you, and it means nothing outside our own statistics.
• which parts of a place you actually look at — how many of its photos you swipe through, how far down a page you read, and which buttons and map pins you tap. We count these, never what you thought of them.
• reports when something crashes or goes wrong

That is the whole list, and it is the app’s list. This website collects less: which pages get opened, the device type and the language, and whether you tapped through to the App Store or Google Play. It never works out your country.

What we don’t collect

• No accounts and no sign-in. We never ask for your name or your email.
• No advertising, and no ad networks.
• We don’t sell your data and we don’t share it.
• No tracking across other apps or websites.
• No GPS. The map uses your position on your device only — see below.

Cookies

This website sets no cookies and stores nothing in your browser. That is why there is no cookie banner here. Visitors are counted by a one-way code instead, worked out on our analytics provider’s servers from your network address, your browser and the day. It changes every day and it cannot be turned back into you.

Location

The app can ask for location permission for one reason: to show where you are on the map and what’s near you. Your location stays on your device — it is never collected, stored or sent to us or anyone else. You can decline the permission and the map still works; you just won’t see your own position on it.

That is separate from the rough location in the list above. That one is worked out from your network address, not from GPS, and it is accurate to a town at best — often only to whichever town your mobile operator routes you through. We use it to tell whether people plan a visit at home or open the app once they are there.

Who handles the statistics

PostHog, hosted in the EU. They process the statistics for us and for nothing else, and nobody else receives them.

IP addresses

Your IP address is never stored. On this website PostHog uses it for a moment to work out the anonymous code above, then discards it. In the app it is used to work out the rough location described above, and is discarded the same way.

Delivering the app’s content and this website still means our providers (the content service and the website host) handle standard request data, including your IP, as any website does. We don’t use it to identify you and we don’t build a profile from it.

How long we keep it

Our PostHog project is set to a twelve-month retention window. We don’t copy the statistics anywhere else and we keep no archive of our own.

Children

Heritage Odyssey is suitable for general audiences and does not knowingly collect any data from children.

Using the app

Heritage Odyssey is a travel guide for personal use. Heritage information can change and may contain errors, so check official sources before you travel and follow the rules of each site you visit.

Changes

If anything here changes, we’ll update this page and the date above.

Questions and objections

Email us — about anything on this page, or to object to the statistics described above. There is no switch for it yet, not in the app and not on this site, so email is the only way. Every message reaches a person.
